Allergies An allergy is a chronic condition involving an abnormal reaction to an ordinarily harmless substance called an allergen. The symptoms of an allergy ranges from mild to severe. These substances are known as allergens and are found in dust mites, pets, pollen, insects, ticks, moulds, foods and some medications. People experience different symptoms, depending on the allergen and where it enters the body. Allergic reactions can involve many parts of the body at the same time.
Main allergy symptoms: Common symptoms of an allergic reaction include:
- Sneezing and an itchy, runny or blocked nose (allergic rhinitis)
- Itchy, red, watering eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and a cough
- A raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
- Swollen lips, tongue, eyes or face
- Tummy pain, feeling sick, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Dry, red and cracked skin
